Hi! My name is Mike Lewis, I am a guide with the Colorado Mountain School in Boulder, Colorado and I am going to share my views about the Black Diamond Half Dome Helmet. This helmet comes in brighter colors and personally I like brighter colors. That’s because if I am out in the backcountry and somebody might be looking for me, I like brighter gear so they can find me more easily.

This helmet has a variety of different features. We have clips for the headlamp. I have actually used a headlamp on this helmet multiple times and these clips holds the headlamp pretty well.

I really like this adjustment feature (that tightens or loosens the helmet) because I can use it with gloves. It’s pretty flexible so it moves around. I don’t have to dig up under the helmet with thick gloves on. I can pull the knob down and it just twists to get the helmet tighter or looser.

Sometimes you’ll find your helmet has a fixed length chin strap. But this one you can adjust it as the day goes on. It adjusts super easily, if you want it tighter or looser. You can pull one tight and one loose so that you can get the chin and ear straps exactly where you want them. You can easily get them under your ears and not too far up on your jaw or on your face.

One thing about this helmet is it’s a hard shell helmet. There are two different kinds of helmets, hard and soft shells. For a hard shell helmet, this is about as light as it gets. And lightweight is definitely what you want when you are alpine climbing and hiking lots of miles carrying all the gear that you have.

I love hard shell helmets for alpine climbing because lots of times you have your helmet on the outside of your pack when approaching. Or you’re just bumping around through third and fourth class climbing, taking your pack off, and setting things down. So, this is a really nice helmet because it’s durable and lasts a long time.

Anything you don’t like about this helmet?

Anything I don’t like about the helmet? Let’s see…

I haven’t found anything…

Well, I guess one thing I will share is that you will definitely want to get this in the right size. Because this does come in different sizes. Some helmets are one size that fits all, but this one comes in a medium and large, so two different sizes. And I have seen people with this helmet and it was too small, so the top would come up too high on people’s forehead. With any kind of helmet you want the front of the helmet right on the top of the eyebrow so that your keeping your brain safe.

So again, if you get this too small, it will rest way too high on your forehead.

Can I see what it looks like on?

Sure. Here it is.

How many stars out of 5 would you give it?

For a hardshell helmet I don’t think it really gets any better than this one. So, 5 out of 5!

How long have you owned the helmet for?

I have had this one for about 6 months.

Alright, thank you very much.

You’re welcome.
