Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets

Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets are the best backup water treatment option for hiking and backpacking.

Here’s why I use Katadyn Water Purification Tablets

Here’s the deal: as far as chlorine dioxide products go, Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets are up there with the best of them.

On a recent trip, I brought with me a packet of Aquamira tabs and a friend of mine had the Katadyn water purification tablets. They both use chlorine dioxide instead of iodine, and they both worked great.

To be honest, there was really nothing too special about the Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets. They’re tablets designed to treat your water of nasty bacteria and keep you healthy.

All water purification tablets will make your water taste nasty. But, they’re lighter than a standard, portable water filter. So, it’s a trade-off you have to consider.

But most people don’t use these as a primary water treatment option. Most (including me) will bring Katadyn Miccropur Purification Tablets, or other iodine or chlorine dioxide water tablets, as a back-up to their filter.

After all, you always want to be prepared for the worst while backpacking, especially while in Glacier National Park.

Why Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets?

It comes down to this: you should always have back-up purifier options in case your pump breaks on a hike. Tablets are the easiest form of secondary water cleaners to carry. They hardly weigh anything at all and they get the job done.

Tablets take a lot longer than pumps to clean water. To be one hundred percent effective, these Katadyn Water Purification Tablets take up to four hours to do their jobs.

Nevertheless, it is a great idea to have them in case of emergency.

But when you’re looking for which tablets to buy, is there something you should look for in particular? Sure. Price.

One of the best aspects of Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets is the price. You get 30 tablets for ten bucks.

That’s not too much cheaper than other tablet brands, like Aquamira, but every penny counts. It certainly does to me, anyway, and I’m willing to bet that it does to you, too.

Katadyn Water Purification Tablets: What Do They Do?

Let’s be honest here. Most companies trying to sell you water purification tablets are going to say that their product, and only theirs, doesn’t taste bad at all.

They will say that water cleansed by their tabs taste like fresh water dripping off a pure glacier.

Or at the very least, they will say that it’s a clean and great tasting as tap water in developed countries.

This, my friends, is a lie.

No matter how much they try to make them otherwise, water purification tablets don’t make the water taste great at all.

I don’t use iodine products, because that taste makes me want to gag.

So I choose chlorine dioxide ones, like the Katadyn Water Purification Tablets instead.

But these don’t exactly turn bog water into Perrier either.

In fact, most chlorine dioxide tablets make the water smell and taste like a swimming pool.

However, this is a heck of a lot better than the alternative: drinking water that looks and tastes great from a river in Glacier National Park (or wherever you’re hiking) and later getting incredibly sick because you drank untreated water.

In fact, another great thing about the Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets is that they are the only brand of their type on the market that is EPA-registered to obliterate all:

  • Bacteria
  • Viruses
  • And cysts

You just drop one tablet into one liter of water and wait. Depending on how low you wait, you can get rid of a lot of nasty critters in your water.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • 15 Minutes: viruses and bacteria in all water
  • 30 Minutes: Cryptosporidium and Giardia in normal water
  • 4 Hours: Crypto in the worst water (the kind you’d want to double-pump)

While tablets are certainly not my preferred way of treating water, they are always good to have in a backpack pocket for emergencies.

And if you’re going to have some, you should probably look into picking up some Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets. They don’t taste great, but no tablet really does. And they protect you against some really terrible viruses and bacteria.

My verdict: Katadyn’s water treatment tablets are the perfect back-up solution for treating water when hiking or backpacking
