Preventing Bear Attacks: Q&A on Preventing Grizzly Bear Attacks

I read in the FAQ’s concerning bears that you should remove your hiking clothing that you cooked in.

Is that open-fire cooking, or does that include backpack stove-type cooking?

Answer

Hi Jeff,

Fantastic question.

Grizzly bears have an extraordinary sense of smell. They can smell food from miles away and will travel many miles every night searching for food.

In order to minimize the chance of a grizzly bear being attracted to your campsite, you must not sleep in any hiking clothes that you cooked in.

It doesn’t matter if you’re cooking with an alcohol stove or over an open campfire–if you’re cooking in your clothes, they go in your pack and over the bear pole.

How do I prevent grizzly bear attacks?
Kevin

I am thinking of coming to Glacier National Park for a vacation with my wife, 3 children, and two dogs.

I have heard that there are many Grizzly Bears living in the park. Would we be protected from them and what is the likelihood of a Grizzly Bear attack?

Answer

Hi Kevin,

Yes, there are many grizzlies in Glacier National Park. However, the chance of you or your family getting attacked by a grizzly bear are very slim.

That said, there are a number of resources on this site that are must-reads:

Finally, the appropriate precautions means having at least one can of bear spray on you. Bear repellent is more effective than a gun in deterring an aggressive grizzly bear.

You’ll probably never have to use it, but God forbid you do, those 50 bucks will save your life.

Now, about your dog…

Put him in a kennel. Dogs are not allowed on any trails in Glacier National Park.

If you have an RV, the dogs can stay in there. But leaving them outside the tent is illegal and dangerous (they’ll be a grizzly’s dinner).
