The Suunto Ambit3 Peak: A Perfect Backcountry Watch

Suunto Ambit3 Peak Watch

Suunto has long been one of the premier “smart watch” producers, making GPS-enabled, wearable technology before the term “smart watch” was even in existence.

These days, smart watches are very much a thing, and Suunto is still at the top of their game. The company’s latest model, the Ambit3 Peak, proves that increased competition has driven Suunto to surpass all of their previous efforts to produce the perfect watch for backpacking, hiking, running, or any other strenuous outdoor activity.

Features

The Suunto Ambit3 Peak comes with all of the outdoorsman’s essentials in a smart watch, and adds plenty of bonus features.

For starters, the Ambit3 Peak has a barometric altimeter and magnetic compass, essentials for any backcountry trip. The watch also has top-of-the-line GPS functionality, and includes a heart rate monitor and fitness tracker.

The Ambit3 Peak also has bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to sync all of the watch’s info to your smart phone or tablet, and vice versa. Accordingly, you can view text messages and phone calls on your watch, allowing you to be more hands-free during your excursions.

Perhaps the most unique feature included in the Ambit3 Peak is the Suunto Movescount App, which, when downloaded on your phone or tablet, allows the watch to reach a new level of technology, as you can map your routes on the go, relive your treks through interactive movies on 3D maps, and share all of your adventures with friends.

The Suunto Ambit3 Peak vs. the Garmin Fenix 3

Perhaps the most relevant comparison to the Ambit3 Peak is the Garmin Fenix 3. This watch is also a fantastic piece of outdoor watch technology, with some features included that the Ambit3 Peak lacks.

The Fenix 3, when paired with the Garmin HRM-RUN heart rate monitor, includes recommended recovery time, recovery check, a race pace predictor, and VO2 max estimate. The watch also vibrates to alert you to move when you’ve been resting for too long, and activity and sleep monitors. It is, undoubtedly, a top-shelf smart watch, and represents another great option for an avid backpacker.

However, I prefer the Ambit3 Peak because of its capability for more than just outdoors-related functionality. The Ambit3 Peak could easily be a day-to-day watch for you as well, what with its voice and text technology.

While you can’t go wrong with either of these smart watches, the Ambit3 Peak takes the cake for me. Alternatively, if you’re looking to spend a little less, the FitBit Surge represents a cheaper alternative to outdoor smart watches.

Where to Get the Suunto Ambit3 Peak

The Suunto Ambit3 Peak is available from REI here. The base model, the Ambit3 Peak Black, costs $550, and has a frame made of a solid black composite. Meanwhile, the Sapphire model comes with a stainless steel frame, and will run you $650.

Depending on your needs, either the Black or Sapphire model of the Ambit3 Peak will be the perfect watch for your next outdoor adventure. I highly recommend both of these Suunto products.

Comments

  1. Im contemplating what to buy between Fenix 3 and ambit 3 peak. I’m more to running and biking. I want a more accurate GPS. Thanks for any information.

  2. The Fenix3 GPS is horrible on twisty trails. Doesn’t track nearly as well as an iPhone or the older garmin units like 310xt. The Suunto would be a far better GPS unit
